5 Step Decluttering Process

 

Decluttering is one of the most important steps when wanting to organize your space, especially when you have ADHD. Here is an easy 5 step process that you come implement on your next decluttering project:

step one:

SORT

Sorting when decluttering means putting similar things together so it's easier to find and use them later.

  • Pick one category (like clothes or books) and gather all of them in one place.
  • Decide which items you want to keep, donate, or throw away/recycle by asking yourself if they're useful, brings you joy, or if you;ve used them recently. 
  • Put the things you're keeping back in their designated zone.    (clothes -> closet), making sure to label containers or shelves te help you remember where everything goes. 

 

 

step two:

PURGE

Purging when decluttering means getting rid of things you don't need or want anymore to make your space feel less crowded and more organized.

  • Take one area at a time and ask yourself if each item is something you use, love, or find important.
  • If the answer is no, consider donating it to someone who could use it or toss it out if it's no longer usable.
  • It's okay to let go of things and that having fewer belongings can help you feel lighter and more focused.

 

 

step three:

ORGANIZE

Organizing when decluttering means finding a place for everything so it's easy to find and put away.

 

  • Sort similar items together and give them designated spots, like putting all your books on a bookshelf or using labeled containers for toys;
  • Make sure everything has a zone, designated place, and put things back in their place after using them to keep things tidy;
  • Use visual cues like color-coded bins or labels to help you remember where things belong and make it easier to maintain an organized space.

 

 

step four:

EVALUATE

When decluttering, evaluating means deciding what items are important and worth keeping based on their usefulness and personal value.

 

  • Ask yourself if you have used or needed the item recently and if it still serves a purpose in your life.
  • Consider if the item brings you joy or holds sentimental value.
  • If you find it difficult to decide, imagine your space with or without the item and think about how it contributes to your overall organization and well-being.

 

 

step five:

MAINTAIN

Maintaining when decluttering means keeping your space organized and clutter-free over time.

 

  • Develop a routine by setting aside a few minutes each day to tidy up and put things back in their designated spots.
  • Regularly reevaluate your belongings by asking if they're still useful or if they continue to bring you joy, donating or discarding items that no longer serve a purpose.
  • Use visual reminders like labels, color-coded systems, or checklists to help you stay on track and make it easier to maintain an organized environment.
